They have become the most significant regulatory power of local government, ultimately determining how we experience our cities. Yet zoning remains invisible.

About the author: Sara C. Bronin is an architect, attorney, and policymaker, and professor at Cornell University. Born and raised in Houston (the only large city in the U.S. without zoning), she divides her time between Hartford, Connecticut, and Washington, D.C.
